With the UK-wide lockdown, many of us are either working from home, or we’ve been furloughed from our jobs. Boredom has crept in, and many of us are turning to updating our interiors, leading many to indulge in some DIY. A recent survey of 2,000 Brits revealed that the DIY tasks that the majority of us will be getting up to during this period of ‘new normal’. The study showed that 71 percent are aiming to complete some form of DIY project throughout lockdown, with 32 percent stating that they have already embarked on one.
Despite 36 percent admitting to a DIY disaster in the past, 81 percent believe that this time is the best chance that they are going to have in order to give their home some much required tender loving care.
Current UK DIY trends indicate that there are going to be a lot more DIY tables after this lockdown. There is also a trend for reupholstering and painting. People are capitalising on this time in lockdown, as we don’t quite know when this will end or when we might possibly get this sort of free time again in our lifetime.
Some of the other popular lockdown DIY searches include; cabinets, benches, ornaments, lamps, shelves, chairs and desks.
The recently carried out study also discovered that of the 36 percent who previously admitted to DIY disasters, 28 percent had been to A&E with related injuries. The most common injuries being; falling from a ladder, electrocution, incident with a lawnmower and contact with a power tool.
With the current NHS situation, putting in additional safety measures and precautions is a must. Avoid undertaking any tasks that you are not 100 percent confident with, especially if those tasks involve heights, tools or materials that you haven’t used before. If you are living alone and completing DIY tasks, make sure that someone knows what you’re doing – especially if these tasks involve plumbing, electrical components and fixtures. You should take extra care as any faults in the process could leave you without heating, water or electricity for a longer than normal period of time – and a hefty call out fee!
